Curriculum & Learning Resources and Scholarship

The AAMC Curriculum Inventory collects participating U.S. and Canadian medical school curricular data. Academic Medicine and MedEdPORTAL, the two peer-reviewed, indexed journals of the AAMC, equip healthcare professionals across the continuum with educational tools and scholarship on innovations in medical education.

Curriculum Inventory and Reports (CIR)

Education programs including medical schools maintain curriculum inventories, or maps, of their programs to help visualize curriculum as a whole. Having a detailed and accurate curriculum inventory serves multiple functions, including:

  • curriculum leaders can better assess their programs and judge where and how to make changes;
  • curriculum leaders can assess for planned and accidental redundancies, working to make curriculum ever more efficient;
  • faculty can see how their teaching contributes to the overall curriculum, and can better target their content to the students’ curricular needs at the time;
  • students can see where they’ve been and where they’re going in the curriculum.

Maintaining a curriculum inventory is a Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) accreditation standard for medical schools. The AAMC collects curriculum inventories from medical schools to produce reports to help schools benchmark their curriculum, learn about curricular trends and innovations, and plan curricular change.

The AAMC Curriculum Inventory (CI) also supports AAMC’s role as an advocate for medical schools to legislative and media groups. The AAMC CI works closely with representative members of our organization on a committee, works with industry vendors to best support schools with learning management technology, and hosts resources through our website.
